Richard Kale (1960-2013)
Catawba, NC Potter, Face Jug Artist and Pastor
According to Self-Taught, Outsider and Folk Art: A Guide to American Artists, Locations and Resources, 3d ed. Paperback by Betty-Carol Sellen, Richard turned his first face jug in 1986 or 1987 and became a full time potter in 1992 after being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy and leaving his career in cable manufacturing.
According to an online for sale posting from the time, Richard Lee Kale retired, sold his estate (including his pottery making equipment) and moved out of state with his former wife Jane Deal Kale (also a face vessel artist) in 2008. His obituary lists his year and place of death as 2013 in North Dakota, His son Jamie Kale (1977-) continues to make pottery and face jugs in North Carolina. Richard Kale is the son of Harry C Kale (1912-?), a famous Catawba Valley potter from the early 20th century.
