Pottery Identification Wiki

Catawba Valley Potter Roger Hicks of Lenoir, North Carolina (Caldwell County)

1940-

Signed work RH at Bolicks Pottery (apparently an uncommon signature for him). At least one such piece is dated 1980. I do not know if all such pieces denote a certain time period.

Also signed some pieces simply "Hicks".

Trained Glenn Bolick or trained by Glenn and Lula Bolick, I have read both. The latter makes more sense as Bolick is from the Owens multi-generational pottery family. Bolick is Roger Hicks' brother-in-law.

Also has been featured at Bolick and traditions pottery kiln openings, reportedly.

Lost his sight in his late teens. Mostly blind by age 20 and totally blind by age 40.

Stopped turning pottery due to arthritis. Had retired from pottery at least by 2017. Was active at least between 1980 and 1998 based on dates on his pieces.

Also a master guitar picker and player of other musical instruments. Retired as a piano tuner in 1980.
